When you are a beginner there are few things you need to always remember while Typing. In the initial phase, the habit of looking at the keyboard is always detrimental to your typing progress, It will affect your ability to type accurately in the long run. Purpose of Typing Practice is at the physical level is to strengthen your finger muscles which takes considerable time to happen. There is a Phenomenon attached to Typing skill which is called by Psychologists Plateau. What is a plateau, plateau means halt of progress in any skill even with regular practice, To understand it you first need to understand that why does it happen in typing although this phenomenon is observable even in driving, swimming etc. to some extent.

Hindi Typing Test In Exam Mode

Exam Mode is an attempt on our part to make this Hindi Typing Test more Exam Oriented so, we can fulfil the demands of those serious students who are preparing for Government Typing Exams. After Intensive research and brainstorming, we created this Exam centric typing test which is designed using very complex algorithms that will be able to resemble the typing calculation of different governmental Typing tests such as SSC, Railway, Banks etc. Before we Proceed let us lay the blueprint of this approach. There are two methods of typing calculation is provided both methods are useful for different government typing exams.

One of the major problems with the calculation of typing speed is the unequal length of words so it becomes difficult to provide a consistent speed calculation method for that purpose different techniques are used.
Calculation of Words: Standard parameter for calculation is fixed at 5 characters i.e. five characters will constitute a word, for that purpose number of characters will be divided by 5.

Nature of Errors: Error can be divided into many types-

  1. Full Mistakes: Any word missed, any word substituted, any word added will fall under this category.
  2. Half Mistakes: Half mistakes will include spacing errors such as no space or extra space in a typing test, spelling errors such as repetition, addition, omission or substitution and wrong capitalization replacing small case for capital letters or vice versa.

  • Penalty for errors: For each full mistake penalty will be 10 words or 50 strokes, it is applied in the first method.
  • Method of scoring: The Net Typing Speed and Accuracy will be calculated for each candidate.
  • Gross Typing Speed: In layman's term it is WPM without errors. Suppose you typed 1000 strokes in 5 mins then your speed will be 1000/5=200 words per five minute and in one minute your Gross Typing Speed will be 200/5=40 WPM.
  • Calculation Of Errors: Suppose in the above test you made 3 full mistakes and 6 half mistakes then it will be calculated as such 3+6/2=6 mistakes.
  • Penalty: Since each mistake is equal to 10 words then the penalty will be calculated as 6*10 = 60 mistakes in 5 mins or 12 mistakes in 1 minute.
  • Net typing speed: Net Typing Speed= Gross Typing Speed-Penalty for errors. In the above case net speed will be 40-12=28WPM
  • Accuracy: In the above case accuracy will be (28/40)*100=70%
  • 5% mistakes are ignorable: This is the standard procedure for counting error by disregarding 5% mistakes out of total words, for example, you pressed total 3000 characters, in other words, 3000/5=600 words and you made 30 words error then your error would be equal to 600*5/100=30 so your countable mistakes would be 0 errors. This method is popular in most government exams typing tests.

How do typing speed in Govt. Exams is calculated?

There are Standardized Formulas for Calculating Speed of Typing Test. Particular Formulas are Used for Calculating speed which is Explained Below.

GWPM ( Gross Word Per Minute )

Gross Word Per Minute is reached by first dividing all Typed Characters by 5 then whatever number is derived should be divided by Total Time in Minutes.

hindi-typing-test-gross-speed-formula

Gross Word Per Minute Doesn't Take into Consideration the Error Rate. So that your Speed depends Purily on Keystrokes you Press. Suppose You Insert 100 Keystrokes or Characters so your GWPM would be 100/5=20 Word Per Minute (Gross).

Net Speed (WPM)

Net Word Per Minute would be your Actual Speed on which you can rely because it subtracts the error rate from GWPM. Net Speed would be- Net Speed (WPM) = Gross Speed - Error Rate

hindi-typing-test-net-speed-formula

If you made Error on 5 words then your Net Speed would be 20-5=15WPM. Words are Calculated by taking an average of 5 characters equal to a word so that we can derive constant but actual Speed.

Error Rate (WPM)

Error Rate is obtained by dividing Incorrect Words by Total Time (in Minutes). Suppose you made Error in 9 Words in 3-minute Typing Test then your Error Rate would be 9/3=3 Words which will be Substituted from Gross Word Per Minute.

Accuracy (%)

Accuracy is Determined by Dividing the Correct entries by Total Words and the result should be multiplied by 100 for Percentage. Suppose you Made 40 correct entries out of 50 Total Entries of words then result Accuracy would be (40/50)*100=80%.

Typing Speed Calculation Examples

Evaluate the subsequent clause for typing :-

There was once a fisherman who lived with his wife in a pigsty, close by the seaside.
Suppose user typed out this clause in one minute.

Case 1: There was once a fisherman who lived with his wife in a pigsty, close by the seaside.

  • Gross Characters = 85 (Total characters in clause including spaces and any punctuation mark present)
  • Wrong Characters = 0
  • Net Characters = 85 - 0 = 85
  • Net Speed = 85 / (5 x 1) = 17 WPM
  • Gross Speed = 85 / (5 x 1) = 17 WPM
  • Error Rate = 0 / (5 x 1) = 0 WPM
  • Accuracy = (85 / 85) x 100 = 100%

Case 2: There was oce a fisherman who lived with his wife in a pigsty, close by the seaside.

  • Gross Characters = 84
  • Wrong Characters = 5 (1 wrong word)
  • Net Characters = 85 - 5 = 79
  • Net Speed = 79 / (5 x 1) = 15.8 WPM
  • Gross Speed = 84 / (5 x 1) = 16.8 WPM
  • Error Rate = 5 / (5 x 1) = 1 WPM
  • Accuracy = (79 / 84) x 100 = 94.04%

Case 3: There was once a fisher fisherman who lived with his wife in a pigsty, close by the seaside.

  • Gross Characters = 92
  • Wrong Characters = 5 (1 extra word)
  • Net Characters = 92 - 5 = 87
  • Net Speed = 87 / (5 x 1) = 17.4 WPM
  • Gross Speed = 92 / (5 x 1) = 18.4 WPM
  • Error Rate = 5 / (5 x 1) = 1 WPM
  • Accuracy = (87 / 92) x 100 = 94.56%

Case 4: There waas once a fisherman who lived with his wifein a pigsty, close by the seaside.

  • Gross Characters = 85
  • Wrong Characters = 7.5 (1 wrong word + 1 merged)
  • Net Characters = 85 - 7.5 = 77.5
  • Net Speed = 77.5 / (5 x 1) = 15.5 WPM
  • Gross Speed = 85 / (5 x 1) = 17 WPM
  • Error Rate = 7.5 / (5 x 1) = 1.5 WPM
  • Accuracy = (77.5 / 85) x 100 = 91.17%

Case 5: There was a fisher man who lived with his wife in a pigsty, close by the seaside.

  • Gross Characters = 81
  • Wrong Characters = 7.5 (1 missing word + 1 split)
  • Net Characters = 81 - 7.5 = 73.5
  • Net Speed = 73.5 / (5 x 1) = 14.7 WPM
  • Gross Speed = 81 / (5 x 1) = 16.2 WPM
  • Error Rate = 7.5 / (5 x 1) = 1.5 WPM
  • Accuracy = (73.5 / 81) x 100 = 90.74%

Purpose of Exam Mode

We added an extra feature of Exam mode in the Hindi Typing Test for those serious users who are preparing for different Government Exams such as SSC, Bank etc. They needed a typing test which is very accurate according to their exam demands. We developed this Exam mode after observing the typing calculation in most Government typing exams. Our digest of reflection forced us to create two more calculation methods prevalent in Government exams. One is widespread generally in Banking exams where one mistake is multiplied by 10 in typing calculations. Another approach has usually been applied in SSC Exams where 5% of mistakes are ignorable. So we are providing both typing speed calculation methods, users use them responsibly.
