In the Punjabi language, there are two types of keyboard is in use, one is Asees font keyboard which is the legacy font keyboard another is Punjabi Raavi (Inscript) keyboard which is Unicode font. Legacy fonts are those fonts which are in popularity from the time of typewriters. The legacy font became widespread out of convention because when typewriters were in use this font was created so that the problem of muddling up the key in keyboard could be gotten away. In this way, keyboard keys were arranged and as time passed by typewriters went out of use but keyboard layout became permanent.


Government of India started the initiative to standardise the all official language keyboard layout, the major objective of this initiative was to create a keyboard layout which has similarity across all language keyboard layout from this enterprise came out the Unicode based fonts which don't assign the keys to appropriate keys font in another language but generate that language key font directly from this language on the screen. In current days government is trying to switch typists in Unicode based fonts which don't use any alt code unlike legacy fonts, this keyboard layout uses grammar method to generate new characters using two characters to type consecutively.

Types of Punjabi Keyboard

1) Punjabi Asees Font Keyboard
  1. Asees Font is a legacy font in Punjabi keyboard which was popular among typist from the time of typewriters.
  2. Asees Font is more popular in government offices among clerks and typists.
  3. Asees Font uses the alt code to type special characters.

2) Punjabi Inscript ( Raavi Font ) Keyboard
  1. Raavi Font in Punjabi Keyboard is a Unicode based font. Which is getting popular in government offices. Government has more focus on making this keyboard layout more common.
  2. Raavi Font does not use alt code to type special characters but it makes typing special characters by the combination of two characters consecutively.

How does virtual Punjabi keyboard work?

Punjabi is a language of an Indo-Aryan language branch which spreads into Indian subcontinent with the worldwide diaspora. The word Punjabi has been originated from word Panj-aab coined in the Indian subcontinent from Turko-Persian speakers which in Persian means "five waters". Many languages influenced the Punjabi language in historical time but the Persian and Arabic influence on Punjabi is noteworthy. In historical times Punjabi is developed from Sanskrit through Prakrit languages, Sanskrit gave birth to many regional languages in India Prakrit is one of them. Shahmukhi is written like Urdu from right to left but Gurmukhi is written like Devanagari from left to right fashion. The Punjabi language has 35 alphabets. Punjabi is among the 22 national languages of India whereas Hindi and English as official languages of India.
